Malaria
Today, there are less projects being conducted than there were previously for malaria research. At Latrobe University, vaccine development is one of the main areas in scientific research. It is difficult to vaccinate against Malaria, due to the reason that there are multiple forms of the parasite, and the parasite can easily change its exterior. As the body tries to fight of the parasite, the parasite will have already infected the whole body. To create a vaccine for Malaria, it is very important to have a wide understanding of the life cycle of the parasite. This is because to make an antibody that fights off the disease, it is imperative that you know what proteins are contained inside the parasite.
The Black Death
Several infections occurred whilst creating the Black Death vaccine. The vaccine’s effectiveness was not properly tested, although field tests suggest that the vaccine stops the infection from spreading through the flea’s bite. The plague vaccine used in America is prepared from Yersinia pestis organisms grown in the lab, deactivated with formaldehyde, and preserved in 0.5% phenol. The vaccine has small quantities of beef-heart extract, yeast extract, agar, and peptones and peptides of soya and casein.
